2025- Telugu
Starring : Ramcharan, S.J.Suryah , Kiara Advani, Anjali , Sunil , Srikanth, Jayaram and Samuthrakani
Directed by Shankar
Plot : Ram Nandhan, an honest and upright IAS officer, takes charge of a district and vows to eliminate all illegal activities and corruption. His relentless efforts to uphold justice soon bring him into direct conflict with Minister Bobbili Mopi Devi, who also happens to be the Chief Minister’s son. As the rivalry intensifies and turns deeply personal, Ram uncovers a shocking connection that ties him to both Mopi Devi and his father, Sathya Narayana, as well as his own late father, Appana. How Ram navigates this complex web of personal and professional challenges to honor his father’s legacy while upholding justice forms the rest of the story.
Performance wise , RamCharan is very sincere as Ram Nandhan , his transformation from a College Student to IAS to EO is good but RC as Appanna steals the show. His portrayal of Appana will be talked for so long, small role but huge impact. S.J Suryah as Mopi Devi is good but at times his over the top caricaturish performance dilutes the seriousness of the character. Nevertheless a decent performance. Kiara Advani gets a minor role but has nothing more than to show glamour and dance in a couple of songs. Compared to her , Anjali gets a better and meatier role. Her performance in Flashback portion , especially in Konda Devara song was absolute fire. Though her present portions makeup looks unintentionally funny , good performance. Srikanth's role as Secondary Antagonist is good but the writing is so shallow hence it is neither serious nor impactful , but Srikanth has done a great job in elevating such a mediocre written role. Sunil gets a sidekick role which has some funny gags that do not land . Naveen Chandra small decent role. Vennela Kishore Cameo unnecessary. Samuthrakani small role , pretty decent performance nothing much to rave about. Jayaram's role leans heavily toward being caricaturish, yet he manages to deliver moments of genuine humor. His portrayal is light-hearted and adds a touch of fun to the narrative.
Technically the film is a Hit and Miss. Music by Thaman is terrific. While the placements seem funny , the songs are wonderful. Raa Macha Macha , Dhop ,Jaragandi and Konda Devara are terrific on screen. Visually and Musically it is a bliss to watch the songs on screen. Dhop song clearly has Shankar Mark on it and Jaragandi is visually stunning. BGMS by Thaman is one of the biggest asset of this film. Born to Shine track is just terrific. Cinematography by Tirru is both brilliant and boring at places. While some shots are terrific , some mocobot shots are just taken lazily to elevate a simple scene (just Ramcharan walking wearing a glass). Editing unfortunately takes a back seat in this film. Editors Shameer Muhammed & Ruban's cuts are very haphazard and random that they cut each scene before it ends and they transition it to next scene even before the impact of previous scene lands. The VFX at places are very mediocre (except for Dhop song) , very funny and unintentionally bad. Definitely not Shankar standard.
The film starts of with Ram Nandhan's Intro as Collector and slowly moves into his college portions and his transformation from a College Student to a IPS then IAS. Ramcharan looked fab in College portions , his anger issues as core seemed pretty good but the unnecessary and completely illogical love track and unwanted Koparap drags down this sequence a bit. Then while the film jumps back to present it kinda gets interesting especially the clash between a Collector and Minister gets very interesting. Pre Interval Sequence 10 mins are just fantastic theatre moment that elevates this average flick to a peak point. Post that the Flashback opens which is both fantastic and emotional and puts a solid basement for a beautiful second half but unfortunately the film doesn't do justice to it.
Talking about the negatives, the film's shallow writing is the film's biggest enemy. While the core plot seems to be decent, the screenplay seems to be very shallow and seems very convenient at times. While the flashback is brillaint and some proceedings in present are interesting to watch , as a whole the film's screenplay could've been much much better. Sunil's comedy track seems so forced and they could've easily avoided it. While there are so many logic loopholes about many proceedings, especially a character being shifted from One Ranking to Another Ranking within Minutes or Days seems very unbelievable ( I honestly don't know whether it is possible or not but too visually see it was kind of unbelievable). The Entertainment factor of the film keeps fluctuating on and off. Also the Political proceedings look a bit outdated, they could've upgraded it. While some stunts are decent, the intro train episode is unintentionally funny and logicless. Also as the film was taken over a 2 years , there are lot of continuity errors . For example Prudhviraj character will have Full beard in Scene 1 , Clean Shave in Scene 2 and again full beard in scene 3 and all these scenes happen one after other.
Director Shankar who has taken cult classics like Mudhalvan , Gentleman, Indian and Shivaji dips down very much in this film. While there are some Shankar mark scenes here and there , overall it doesn't feel like a 100% Shankar film. Main Story by Karthik Subbaraj is pretty decent but Shankar's outdated screenplay doesn't bring 100% out of the story. Some transitions such as transferring ministers (if you would've seen the film you'll get the reference) seems very amateurish and funny. The Inconsistency of characters and a very mediocre screenplay bogs down this decent political action film into something just watchable. Though it was much better than Indian 2 , still it is not upto the director's mark.
Overall: Shankar's Game Changer is a very average Political Drama film that is shouldered by Ramcharan's performance and Thaman's terrific music. Was it beter than Indian 2 ? YES. Was it Shankar's Comeback? Partially but not fully. Shankar should definitely up his game to survive in the long run. Don't watch thinking it is a Shankar film , imagine if Koratala Siva or Harish Shankar directed a Political Film , that is Game Changer
