Tamil - 2024
Starring : HipHop Tamizha Aadhi , Kashmira , Anikha , Ilavarasu , Thiyagarajan ,Bhagyaraj, Prabhu and Devadarshini
Plot : Kanagavel , A PT Sir who works in a Private School cares for his Neighbour Nandhini as his sister. When she commits suicide due Harrasment in her College Premises, Kanagavel decides to fight against the system to get justice for her.
Aadhi as Kanagavel does an honest job. Though at places we cannot accept him speaking heavy dialogues due to his romcom hero image , but still gives his best. Kashmira gets a good role but is completely wasted in the Second Half. Compared to Kashmira , Anikha gets a bolder and meatier role and performs wonderfully as a Victim. Her pain and angst is portrayed perfectly on screen. Prabhu and Thiyagarajan once again prove why they are Senior Actors. Thiyagarajan gets a solid role as an Antagonist but his arc could've been written better whereas Prabhu who gets a supporting role gets a fantastic arc that is written and performed wonderfully. Bhagyaraj in a Brief cameo steals the sequences where he appears with his humour and witty dialogues. Devadarshini gets a typical mother role that is very cliched. Ilavarasu in a brief role performs fantastic with his simple yet powerful Performance.
Technically the film looks rich . Cinematography by Madhesh is rich and tries to raise the film's production value. Prasanna GK's editing is sharp and to the point, though there are sequences in the first half that could've been easily edited out. Music by HHT Aadhi is good , except for First 2 songs remaining all are Montage Songs that do not interrupt the flow of proceedings. BGMs are good but strongly reminds us of Truth In The Wall BGM from Mangalavaaram.
The First Half travels in Fun Mode with Sequences happening in School and the introduction of Characters and their arcs. The First Half jokes mostly are old school and very basic in level and invoke laughter here and there only. The Romantic Track also seems very artificial and doesn't have any chemistry . The Setup before Pre Interval is very good and the Interval Bang lands perfectly.
The Second Half completely shifts into Courtroom Drama zone with Legal Battle Among Kanagavel and the Antagonist. Though the Proceedings are very simple and regular in manner , the staging and sharp editing makes it interesting. They could've avoided minor humour here and there as the Second Half deals with a very sensitive issue but that doesn't come as a big drawback. The Film's Climax Monologue may seem artificial but the climax twist makes the film work high time.
The Film largely works , there are some drawbacks. Thee Sudden Tonal Shift between First Half and Second Half might not sit well with everyone. The Romantic Track felt awkward and could've been much shorter. Second Half Court proceedings felt a bit amateurish but their aim is understood. There could've been something innovative in the proceedings to make it even more interesting.
Director Karthik Venugopalan has taken a very sensitive and relatable subject that has to be addressed and has narrated it with Commercial Aspects. While the Commercial Aspects do not weigh down the core plot , thr film's packaging could've been much sleeker. The Title can be easily mis interpreted into the film being labelled as a jolly Rom com but the film's core is something completely different. There are few moments where the messaging goes too high and preachy but is immediately toned down making the film's tone inconsistent. Even with Minor Flaws here and there , PT. Sir largely works due to its honest storytelling about a Sensitive issue and Cracker of a Interval and Climax Bang.
Highlights :
1)Anikha and Ilavarasu wonderful performance
2)Prabhu's Powerful Supporting Role and Bhagyaraj's Hilarious One Liners
3) Interval twist
4)Climax Court Sequence
Overall: PT Sir works high time as a film that deals with a Sensitive Issue brilliantly. Excluding some minor flaws , the film's interval and climax twist makes it work.
Rating : 2.75-3/5
