2023 - Tamil
Starring: Karthi , Anu Emmanuel, Sunil , Vijay Milton , Jithan Ramesh and KS Ravikumar
Plot : Japan , A Notorious Thief who is known for his smart ways of thieving gets framed for a crime which he doesn't commit . How he escapes the trap and finds the true Criminal forms the rest of the story.
Karthi in his Landmark 25th film has tried a grey shaded character with a unique accent but unfortunately it doesn't land properly. The Slang becomes fake and Irritating beyond a point. Also his performance is somewhat average in this film. Anu Emmanuel literally has no role. Sunil gets a decent role and has performed average. Vijay Milton gets a decent debut. KS Ravikumar and Jithan Ramesh are so caricaturishly crafted that they are laughable.
Ravi Varman's Cinematography works at parts. Philomin Raj's Editing was average. GV Prakash songs and BGMs were sub par and forgettable. A Technically Average Film.
Coming to the negatives , The film suffers from a terrible screenplay which is draggy and predictable. Karthi's Unpredictable Behaviour which was supposed to be the film's USP becomes so bad and silly beyond a point. Unwanted Tracks and Boring sequences drag the film badly. Lack of a Strong Motive for the protagonist and a Strong Antagonist makes the film even more dull.
Director Raju Murugan who is known for making Off Beat films like Cuckoo and Joker has tried to do something like a Crime based Black Comedy with Emotional Angle , but unfortunately none of these aspects of the film even 50%. The Film looks half baked and Amateurish. Though the film is a Fictionalized Biopic of a True Person, the film does not feel Interesting. Raju Murugan has tried a Character Driven film but unfortunately both the character arc and situations are poorly designed. The Satirical Dialogues on the current generation, politics and movies are good but don't even sync with the film or scene properly. The Emotional Angle towards the end of the film feels rushed and Cliched. While some One Liners of Karthi and few comic lines here and there work but as a whole Japan is a letdown.
Highlights:
1)Few Karthi's One Liners here and there
2)One or Two Satirical Dialogues on Current affairs
3)A Handful of comedy scenes with Sunil
Overall: Japan is an uninspiring Crime Thriller Black Comedy that falls flat majorly due to its poor screenplay and haphazard execution. Karthi's Sincere efforts are wasted terribly. A Forgettable Outing for both Karthi and Raju Murugan.
