2023 - Tamil
Starring : Ajith Kumar , Manju Warrier , Samuthrakani , John Kokken , GM Sundar , Prem and Veera Bahu
Plot: A Gang led by Radha(Veera) decide to loot a bank . When they break in they're shocked to see that the Bank has already been occupied by a Unknown Man who is robbing the bank. Who is the man ? What's his motive forms the crux of the story.
AK is in fine form. Post Billa & Mankatha he has performed very freely and convincingly in a grey shaded role. It's his Mass Performance that holds the film. Manju Warrier gets a meaty role to prove herself as a Action Lady and does it properly but sadly has no scope to perform or anything. Samuthrakani as the upright police officer is good. Veera Bahu decent role an decent performance. Other supporting cast like John Kokken , Mahanadhi Shankar , GM Sundar , Prem , Bugs etc each shine at their own moments. Out of this Pattimandram Speaker Mohana Sundaram as Mai Pa rocks the audience with his humourous one-liners.
BGM by Ghibran is pretty decent but could've been much better. Except the Gangsta BGM nothing else was great. Songs wise everything decent. Vijay Velukuttys Editing felt a bit hurried and choppy in the first half. Nirav Shah's Cinematography is substandard and has nothing great in particular. Special mention to the 360* Fighting Shot inside the Bank. It was shot in a fantastic manner.
H . Vinoth has taken a serious issue and spun a heist thriller around it. The screenplay feels a bit disoriented at times due to so many things happening within very less time. Also the detailing done is commendable. The second half of the film literally feels like a Shankar or Murugadoss type Vigilante film. Though the director has subtly tried to connect the knots left in the first half are brilliantly connected in the latter half. But the major problem arises in the Flashback sequence. The Character arc of Devil was developed incomplete... His intro was terrific but sudden change in his motives was quite a bit confusing. Also the entire Flashback sequence featuring Darshan felt like another film . Also the weak antagonists and elongated climax was a let down. But The film overall was definitely satisfying tbh. A complex film that was told in a pretty good way that explores a lot of sub-genre issues like Media Exploitation , Politician involvement, Bank Fraud etc.
Highlights :
1)AK's Michael Jackson Dance
2) Gangsta Song and Kalyaan Master Cameo
3)Manju Warrier Action Sequences
4)Mai Pa Comedy Counters with Bala Saravanan and Bugs
Overall : Thunivu is a Complex yet compelling Heist Thriller that becomes a Social Vigilante Thriller in the latter half. It's AK Devilish Perfomance that single handedly balances the film. The film's second half could've been much better with better writing and staging and a much much better climax.
