2026 - Tamil
Starring : Dhanush , Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mamitha Baiju, KS Ravikumar, Jayaram , Karunas and Prithivi Pandiyarajan
Directed by Vignesh Raja
Plot : Kara (also called Karasaamy) is a former thief who has changed his ways. He returns to his village with his wife for a personal reason, but gets pulled into his father’s fight with a local bank. What starts as a small revenge heist soon turns into a much bigger problem. What happens next, and how Kara deals with it, is the rest of the story.
Performance wise, this is an Out and out Dhanush performance. He embodies the role of Karasaamy and has done a fabulous job. Suraj Venjaramoodu is another showstealer. Though his character arc is half written, Suraj does justice to the character with his performance. Mamitha Baiju is not needed at all as even a serial artist could've done that role. Unnecessary casting. Jayaram as Antagonist again feels half baked in writing but is supported by a good performance. Prithivi Pandiyarajan & Karunas Good role and great performance. KS Ravikumar as Kara's Father is Phenomenal in a limited role.
Technically, the film is good. Thanks to cinematography by Theni Eeshwar , the film is visually striking even though largely the scenaries are barren lands. GVP Songs are average except for Karasaamy Song. Editing by Sreejith Sarang especially in the Pre Interval portion is absolutely fantastic but could've had better cuts in Second Half.
The Film opens with introduction of Kara and friend Murugesan and their lifestyle as Theives. Post an Incident their life changes and the film then follows Kara's new life after turning into a new leaf. While the portions are very short the emotional angle somewhat works. Post that the plot shifts to Ramanathapuram and establishes Karasaamy's ties with his family. While the portions go slow , the emotional connect which was present in films like Idli Kadai is missing here. Though KSR does as a fabulous job as Kara's Father, the emotional connect was missing. The plot then shift gears into a Heist film which works. The Pre Interval block is terrific with insane tension buildup. It felt a bit prolonged beyond a point but still the tension built up remains.
Post that, the Second half starts and the film turns into a Cat & Mouse chase thriller among Three Main Characters. While Two Characters are greatly established, the Third one felt underdeveloped. While there are some smart ideas that work , due to prolonged sequence the impact reduces. The Touch with a Vintage Kamal Film was absolutely fantastic but the scene quickly becomes something else reducing that reference to nothing. The Film especially in the last 20 mins turns into a Social commentary which unfortunately feels very cliched and forced. The Ending was pretty decent but the film misses the punch.
Talking about the Negatives , the film's Slowburn Screenplay might not work for everyone. The core idea of building the Protagonist's Emotional position and then getting into the conflict was good but unfortunately scenes drag beyond a point which makes audience feel tired till the Hesit sequences come. Also the Heroine character writing felt very generic even trying to evoke some sort of sympathy instead makes the character label as Selfish or Dumb. The film becomes from a Rural Thriller to a Vigilantee film in the last act and that felt forced and cliched. I can understand they wanted to go in the safe way but they could've explored the psychology of a Thief or done something more exciting.
Coming to Writers Alfred Prakash & Vignesh Raja, the core setup during Gulf War looked interesting but unfortunately they don't even use that setup much which makes it disappointing. While the Heist sequences and Chase sequences are intense , I really wished they had sketched the emotional arc also really well. Director Vignesh Raja's Previous film Por Thozhil also had similar issues but atleast the character traits and backstory were subtly conveyed. The film is definitely not bad , but the biggest disappointment was the film had potential to be something great but instead settles for a safer route.
Overall : Kara works as a Decent Rural Thriller as long as it is a Heist film , once the film shifts gears the film stumbles but at the end reaches it destination in a safe way.Watch out for Dhanush's terrific one man show.
Rating : 2.75-3/5
