2026- Tamil
Starring : Aarya , Gautham Karthik, Manju Warrier , Athulya , Anagha , Raiza Wilson , Kaali Venkat & Sarathkumar
Directed by Manu Anand
Plot : A terrorist group gets hold of a nuclear device lost by India near Nanda Devi in the 1960s and captures a RAW agent guarding it. To recover both, the RAW chief sends agent Amaran Chakravarthy, but when the mission fails, she turns to Gautham, an agent from Chennai. As he investigates, he uncovers a major conspiracy linked to the G20 Summit in Chennai. How he and his team stop a nuclear disaster forms the rest of the story.
Performance wise , Aarya as Gautham is fantastic. He looks and performs really well with some minor flaws here and there but nonetheless an earnest performance. Gautham Karthik as Amaran gets a layered and multi dimensional role which he does well but unfortunately feels like a miscast at times. Manju Warrier as R&AW Chief Indira Devi is absolutely fantastic and nails her role be it in performance or action she did fabulous. Female leads Raiza & Athulya get a decent role with Action have done well while Anagha doesn't have much to do. But unfortunately except Manju , remaining three females roles are written poorly. Sarathkumar merely as an Extended cameo does a fairly neat job but his looks are kind off unintentionally funny which makes the character look caricaturish at times. Kaali Venkat & Jayaprakash typical role and have done well.
Technically the film is pretty decent. Visuals by Arul Vincent feels fresh at times and feels very TV Serial vibes at time . A Mixed Bag. Editing by GK Prasanna is okayish and could've been cut better. Music by Dhibu Ninan Thomas is forgettable whereas Some BGMs are good but loud at times.
The film opens with the Backstory of the Nuclear device and how it got lost in NandaDevi mountains back in 60s. Then directly we jump into present and get intro about Gautham and his team. Here we get a romantic track song that could've been skipped easily. Post that we are introduced to MR.X and Amaran . Here a twist happens which actually ruins the pace of the film. The twist could've been placed in the Interval and the high would've been there. Though the First Half has some good moments none of them land due to lazy and haphazard writing which unfortunately majority of the scenes forgettable. The Flashback felt soulless and rushed . Somewhat the Interval twist was predictable yet it landed properly.
Opening with the Second Half , the film stumbles largely. It goes on and on rounding around the same thing. The Flashback also felt very generic again . The Second Half has some decent moments but the film fails in evoking the sense of urgency as the film reaches its Third act with a big attack planned. One or Twist in the Second Half again felt predictable works but the last Twist feels very rushed and muddled making that twist unnecessary and even contradicts the Protagonist's Emotional Rush. While the Climax fight is decent, it feels stretched beyond a point. The Sequel Lead felt unnecessary .
Talking about the Negatives , the film suffers from lack of Emotional Depth. For a film which should drive on the Protagonist and Antagonist's Emotional depth towards their parents the film feels bland. Also the writing feels very stable Without any highs or lows that actually makes the audience concern. The film's core is great and has a wonderful cast but unfortunately due to overstuffing and lazy writing the film doesn't land the punch. Also the Antagonist's Backstory felt very amateurish and lacked a proper motive.
Coming to Writer Director Manu Anand, his core line is absolutely fantastic and the way he has taken multiple real life incidents and woven it into a full fledged Storyline is great but a tight film like this needed a much more tighter screenplay. Loved some quirky callbacks such as naming Gautham Karthik as Amaran (a quick reference to Karthik's Iconic film Amaran) or making Sarathkumar assume fake identity named as Sureyan or dressing up as Sooryavamsam father character to escape a place. Also the film needed some high points or atleast emotional depth to get connected with audience which the film lacks. A Potential film but marred by lazy writing makes it as an Average fare and nowhere near the Directors Previous film FIR which was far better.
Overall : Mr.X is a fairly average Spy Thriller that has its heart in the right place but lacks soul. A Taut Storyline let down by lazy writing, somewhat is supported by a strong cast but quickly fizzles out like a dummy Diwali Cracker
Rating : 2.5/5
