2026 - Tamil
Starring : Radhika Sarathkumar, Aruldoss, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth , Singampuli , Muthukumar & Rachail Rebecca
Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan
Plot : Pavunthayee is a strict old moneylender whom the village dislikes. When she becomes very sick and is about to die, her three sons and son-in-law come home and learn that she has hidden 120 sovereigns of gold. They hurry to find the gold before she dies and try to get information from her. During this search, old family problems come up, and they begin to understand their mother better and see the softer person behind her harsh behavior.
Performance wise , Radhika as Pavunthayee is absolutely exhilarating. Minimal screentime but maximum screen presence. The pre climax monologue scene proves once again why she is a Veteran Legend. Bala Saravanan, Singam Puli and Aruldoss as her Sons are terrific. Bala Saravanan's Ambulance scene , Singam Puli Cassette scene and even Arul Doss Hospital fight scene show how each and every character were given a moment to shine and indeed they did. Munishkanth gets a meaty role and has once again proved that he is indeed a great actor. Muthukumar gets a regular role and has performed well. Rachail Rebecca gets one solid scene to perform and she does it great. Special mention to the boy who played Rachail Rebecca's Son role.
Technically the film is very strong . Thanks to a very vivid yet beautiful cinematography by Vivek that soulfully captures the essence and quirkiness of the film. Nivas K Prasanna's Songs are beautiful and do not work as a speed breaker instead enhances the scene more . Editing by San Lokesh is great. The technical usage of Kamal Hassan hits were brillaint.
The Film works very well in all aspects. More than criticism, i really want to point out and appreciate few aspects of the film. Right from frame one where names of all the houses are shown to the pay off for Pavunthayee Illam in climax , everything felt so organic and beautiful. The Doctor Scene was absolutely brillaint. Specially in the climax, Pavunthayee says, “Thala Nimirndhu Thaali eduthuko” (Raise your head and take the thaali). Through this powerful line, she gently reminds that a woman should never bow her head in shame, but always stand tall and accept her life with dignity and pride. Though the message of Women Empowerment is said in a direct manner , it doesn't feel preachy or cringe as the current gen records it . It is Powerful, thought provoking and much needed. The main reason is the character arcs of all the characters gradually move from one place to another which inturn makes the final message believable and strong. From a filmmaking pov also , the final twist and the following twist plays smooth on screen which instantly transforms from a comic caper to a thought provoking finale.
Talking about the negatives , I just had one negative that the Tonal Shift in the Second Half might not sit well with everyone.(For me it worked but not sure how it'll work for everyone).
Writer Director Sivakumar Murugesan makes a very strong and desirable debut with a powerful message wrapped up as a Comedy film. Basically the Comedy Portions also works highly and the Emotional Message also works. The Kamal sequences spoofs were Brilliant and in noway diluted the seriousness. The message though again is direct on face , is much needed and impactful.
Overall : Thaai Kizhavi is a brillaint and powerful film that discusses Women Empowerment in a unique manner wrapped as a Comedy Caper. It is rooted, unique and beautiful. A Must watch.
