#VaaVaathiyar
2026- Tamil
Starring : Karthi , Kriti Shetty, Rajkiran , Sathyaraj , Karunakaran and Shilpa Manjunath
Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy
Plot : Ramu, also known as Rameshwaran, is born at the exact moment the legendary MGR passes away, leading his grandfather to believe that the child is MGR’s reincarnation and to raise him strictly by MGR’s philosophies and principles. However, as Ramu grows up, he turns into a corrupt officer, far removed from the ideals he was taught. Years later, a personal tragedy triggers the awakening of a hidden persona within him , Vaathiyar transforming Ramu into a vigilante determined to expose and stop a massive scam. Whether he succeeds in stopping the scam and truly understands the persona within him forms the rest of the story.

Performance wise , Karthi as Rameshwaran is absolutely fantastic and phenomenal. He portrays two distinctive shades as Ramu & Vaathiyar and is fantastic in both showing staunch difference. In scenes where he does both the roles at same scene is fantastic. Kriti Shetty gets a decent role and does a good debut in Tamil. Rajkiran gets a very meaty role and has done a wonderful job. Sathyaraj as Antagonist is weak due to a weak character writing. Though he performs well, the character and conflict arc is weak. Shilpa Manjunath wasted. Karunakaran & Ramesh Thilak decent. Anandraj good role .
Technically the film is decent. Cinematography by George C Williams is pretty substandard as nothing is out of the box or unique. Editing by Vetre is good . Music by Santhosh Narayanan is decent but BGM is pretty good. VFX is mediocre at places.

The film opens with the setup about how the film takes place in a fictional city and the setup regarding the Rajkiran's character relation with Legendary MGR. Then we are shifted to present and how Ramu is brought up not sticking towards MGR's Principals. The film wastes no time, apart from the minor love song in the first half , there is no deviation and we get straight into the conflict point including Sathyaraj, Nizhalgal Ravi, Shilpa Manjunath and Karthi. While there some interesting ideas , its largely Karthi's performance is what drives the film forward. Near by the Interval the film starts its Fantasy plot points and starts to get inside the vigilante portions. The First Half ends with a Banger Interval Fight which is fantastic.
The Second Half opens with the explanation of the conflict point and how Ramu is related to the vigilante Vaathiyar. While the scenes are pretty standard, some sequences especially the Terrace fight , Fingerprint scene and core scenes including Ramu vs Vaathiyar are a treat to watch. While there is minor lag when Rajavin Parvai remix comes , apart from that Second half goes at a fast pace. The Climax which is crazy and fun is fantastic to watch on screen. There is this minor underlying dark humour within the scenes that makes it feel unique.

Talking about the Negatives , the film's conflict point is pretty weak . Due to this weak conflict point, the Antagonist writing also takes a hit . The Fantasy element is unique and that is what makes the film different from regular commercial films but that element is completely ambiguous which is completely upon audience perspective. This rather makes some audience connect with concept while some get disconnected.
Talking abou Writer Director Nalan Kumarasamy, his Third film is completely opposite of what he did in the previous two films. It is a experimental Fantasy Comedy which is a Hit or Miss. While this is not Nalan's Best , it is probably his weakest film where gags do work and the plot is pretty crazy but as a whole something is missing in this film. Karthi's Earnest performance makes the film fun. Again I repeat , this Nalan's Weakest film out of his Three films but doesn't mean that was bad. It was fun.

Overall: Vaa Vaathiyar is a unique Fanatasy Comedy film that suffers from some weak writing but is strongly supported by a phenomenal cast where Karthi shoulders the entire film

Rating : 3-3.25/5
