#RettaThala
Tamil - 2025
Starring : Arun Vijay , Siddhi Idnani , Tanya Ravichandran, Harish Peradi, John Vijay and Balaji Murugadoss
Directed by Kris Thirukumaran
Plot: Kaali, a man with a mysterious past, returns to Pondicherry to marry his childhood love Anthre, only to be rejected for being poor. Broken and desperate, Kaali crosses paths with his wealthy doppelganger, Upendra Malpe. Seizing the chance, Kaali and Anthre kill Upendra and take his place and fortune ,only to discover that Upendra’s life is tied to a dangerous Goan mafia past. As that past closes in, the truth about Kaali’s own identity begins to unfold.

Performance wise , Arun Vijay shoulders the entire film. He shines as both Kaali & Upendra Malpe. He scores well in slight emotional scenes too. Siddhi Idnani gets a meaty role and has done well. Tanya Ravichandran wasted. Balaji Murugadoss gets a small role and has what is necessary for that. Yogesh Tamil Debut is wasted with a one note character. Harish Peradi is underutilized in a main role. John Vijay is given a horrible role and unfortunately gives a terrible and irritating performance.

Technically, the film is strong thanks to Sam CS Music and Tijo Tommy's Cinematography. Tijo's Camera captured Pondicherry & Goa beautifully making the film visually rich. Sam CS songs are decent while BGM are pretty good. Editing by Anthony is haphazard and could've been better . The AI Used in the film absolutely Terrible and unintentionally funny.

The film opens with the introduction of Kaali and Anthre and how their relationship is. Then the film shifts to present and focuses on Kaali and his accidental meetup with his doppelganger Upendra Malpe. The sequences are a bit artificial and forced but do not lag and take the plot forward. Post Kannama Song the film dives into the flashback of Upendra where they use an AI Flashback to establish Harish Peradis gang and that sequences are terrible for two reasons : 1) They were very cliched and 2)The AI was unintentionally funny . The Interval Block also is very routine and doesn't provide a shock value or something banger for Interval block.

The Second Half opens with Kaali's clash with Goan mafia and how he and Anthre escape their clutches . These sequence are repetitive . The Introduction of a character named Unni (played by Debutant Deevra) is absolutely cringe worthy and her performance was so mediocre making the character nothing but irritating. With multiple Antagonists like John Vijay , Yogesh and Harish Peradi nothing actually feels like a threat. The Pre Climax twist alone is something decent but that too is very predictable right from the beginning .

Talking about the film's negatives, the film suffers from bad screenplay. Though some plot points are interesting, the screenplay is so dull that none of the scene evokes a fresh feel. The Antagonists are very poorly written making none of the threats feel real or worth. Also the usage of AI for Character establishment and flashbacks made them unintentionally funny and was bad.

Coming to Writer Director Kris Thirukumaran, the base plot might have looked good on paper but needed a very strong screenplay to bring it on screen. Though some plot points actually work , the film as a whole doesn't work quite completely. Arun Vijay carries the entire film but the film needed a better writing and a stronger third act with some better Antagonists.

Overall : Retta Thala is a middling Thriller that has a good core but is marred by pedestrian writing. Arun Vijay shines in a dull thriller.
Rating : 2.5/5
