Starring: Vijay Sethupathy , Rukmini Vasanth , Yogi Babu , Divya Pillai , Babloo Prithiveeraj and B.S.Avniash
Directed by Arumugakumar
Plot : After being released from a Dubai prison, Bolt Kannan (Vijay Sethupathi), a man with a mysterious past, arrives in Malaysia and starts working at a hotel run by Kalpana (Divya Pillai), alongside the quirky Arivu (Yogi Babu). He soon falls in love with Rukmini (Rukmini Vasanth), but life takes an unexpected turn when all three—Kannan, Kalpana, and Rukmini—find themselves in desperate need of a large sum of money. With no other way out, Kannan hatches a daring plan to rob a bank. What follows is a chain of events as they deal with the fallout of the heist, while trying to stay one step ahead of a determined cop, Rajadurai (Babloo), and a ruthless Loan Shark Dharma (B.S. Avinash).
Performance wise , Vijay Sethupathy and Yogi Babu both shoulder this entire film. Vijay Sethupathy is in his fun zone and does well in his parts. Though there are no much scope to perform , he does his role well. Yogi Babu is a blast and lot of his jokes land really well. His combination scenes with Vjs work largely. Rukmini Vasanth does a decent debut but struggles to perform with very bad lip synch. Divya Pllai gets a much better and meatier role than Rukmini and performs well and provides glam quotient towards the end too. Babloo and Avinash as Antagonists are introduced with much hype but again are watered down to stereotypical dumb villains.
Technically the film is average. Justin Prabhakaran's Urugudhey song is great but otherwise the album is a miss. Sam Cs is another Hero of this film who elevates this film with his terrific Background Score. Cinematography by Karan B Rawat is colourful and beautifully brings the vibrance of Malaysia on screen. Editing by Fenny Oliver is decent.
The film begins with introduction of Bolt Kannan, a Mysterious man and his chemistry with Arivu played by Yogi Babu. While the comedy doesn't alway land , their combination scenes are fun to watch. Following that we see the romantic track between Kannan & Rukku which is not that boring at the same time doesn't feel new at all and feels very cliched generic beyond a point. Maybe the lack of Chemistry between Sethupathy and Rukmini also might be a reason for this. The core point of the plot itself comes after One Hour into the movie only where all the Lead characters get into trouble. While the Poker sequence was good the following sequences didnt keep up the adrenaline pumping effect that Poker sequence gave. Even the hyped interval heist sequence was very average.
Coming to Second Half , here's where the film actually tries to be something else from the regular films. While there are films which talk about the repercussions of a hesit and how the lead characters try to come out of the mess , Ace tries to move in the humour way but that also doesn't work fully. While there are some hilarious fun sequences in Second half , unfortunately the film falters largely.
Talking about the Negatives, the film's lack of a proper storyline is visible . The film starts somewhere, moves somewhere and ends somewhere. The film misses a coherent storyline . Also the emotions do not work properly which inturn makes the events look drab and cliched. Lack of weak antagonist makes the film less interesting.Even the Much Hyped Climax Twist feels like an after thought and doesn't add any surpise factor and feels flat.
Coming to Writer Director Arumugakumar , his core plot is initially exciting but the execution falters largely. Seems like he himself was confused on how the film should proceed , whether it is a Black Comedy ? Or is it a Spoof film or is it a proper action commercial film. The film aims to be all but falls flat when they land. While the film trolls many commercial tropes , that alone is not enough to salvage the film. Sethu and Yogi try to salvage it but...even unfortunately they cannot salvage this trainwreck comedy of errors.
Highlights :
1) Sethupathy Performance
2) Urugudhey Song
3) Sam CS BGM
4) Interval Heist scene
5) Climax
Overall: Ace is an Underwhelming Black Comedy/Drama film that works when it takes it lightly but fails when it takes itself too seriously. Vijay Sethupathy and Yogi Babu tr try to anchor this film but unfortunately they also couldn't beyond a point.
