Plot : Madha Gaja Raja (MGR), a Cable TV owner in a small village, reunites with his school friends at their master’s family function. During the trip, MGR learns that his friends are being harassed by a corrupt businessman, Karukkuvel Vishwanath, and how their lives have been affected. Determined to help, MGR decides to fight against Vishwanath and bring him to justice. Along the way, he falls in love with two women, Maya and Madhavi. How MGR tackles Vishwanath, saves his friends, and resolves his love story forms the rest of the plot.
Before starting my review , I want to clarify one thing that, the Political correctness and Commercial cinema then (2012) was way different than how it is now (2025). So yes, there is body shaming jokes, sleazy glamourous shots of Heroines , Double meaning jokes and unnecessary random songs. Not going to point out about as this is a film that was taken 12/13 years ago and will review upon how the movie was and nothing beyond that .
Talking about performances , Vishal as MGR is fantastic. Though he has less scope for performance or anything beyond what a regular commercial hero does , he fits the bill and does a wonderful job. His timing in Comedy was great. But the show stealer was Santhanam . Vintage Santhanam strikes gold here as he brings down the roof with his crass and crude one liners with Vishal. Santhanam single handedly spearheads the first half with Vishal. Anjali and Varalakshmi have very limited scope and are solely there to be the glamour quotient of the film and they served that purpose well. In terms of Glamour Varalakshmi>> Anjali. Sonu Sood as the Antagonist is very caricaturish and only is there as a reason for story to go forward. Sadagoppan Ramesh and Nithin Sathya get a very limited role and do well on what is given for them. Swaminathan's Humour works terrifically. It was heartwarming to see Late Manivannan and Late Dhool Chitti Babu on screen and they both gave a good performance but one legend who steals the show in second half is Late Manobala. The 20 min stretch between Vishal - Manobala - Santhanam - Motta Rajendran is hilarious and comes as one of the best comedy stretches of the film. Sadha sizzles in a special post credit song and Arya does a fun cameo role.
Technically (surprisingly) ,the film feels fresh and strong. The Visuals don't feel aged and look fresh. Cinematography by Richard M Nathan is visually great and captures the quirky mood of the film properly. Editing by Praveen KL and NB Srikanth uses a lot of old school transistions that are unintentionally funny but somewhat that works for a quirky comedy film like this. Few minutes could've been chopped off easily (with already one song being chopped of). Music by Vijay Anthony comes as one of the biggest asset of the film. All the songs are beautifully composed and shot in a grand manner making it a both visual and audio treat. My Dear Loveru by Vishal is the best song of the album is a blast on screen. Zero VFX makes the film actually organic and connectible.
The Film starts of with the introduction of Madha Gaja Raja and his romantic track with Madhavi. Though it feels cliched , it works on a fun note. Post that introduction of MGR's Friends and the Intro of Maya makes the film more entertaining. The Entire village portions are hilarious. Though there are few 18+ jokes and glamour that might make some families uncomfortable largely they work on screen.
While there is no big conflict or high point, the core story of MGR going against Vishwanath begins in the Interval only. Then the film follows the tried and tested path of Hero vs Villain regular concept. Some colony sequences jokes land though they are very edgy and crude. The entire Manobala stretch in 2nd half stands as the best portion of the Second Half.
Talking about Negatives , there's nothing much in particular to point out as I already mentioned before it was a very old film where the Political correctness was different back then compared to now , so really can't blame the Level of Vulgarity, Double Meaning Jokes and Body Shaming jokes. But yes, the level of those could've been reduced a bit. Also the film which deals the core emotion as friendship and the protagonist's struggle for his friends, the emotional depth was very less and the character writing was shallow.
Director Sundar C who's known for his comedy films helms this one too. This was taken during his peak time where he did films like Kalakalappu , Theeya Velai Seyyanum Kumaru and Aranmanai and is definitely one among that cult classic comedy. Obviously it was not upto the level of Ullathai Allitha or Mettukudi , but definitely one of the best works of Sundar C. The film which runs on thin plotline surprisingly entertains and doesn't have any lags . Yes it has old gen jokes and problematic lines but accepting the fact that it was taken back then , the film works. A 12 Year Delayed film works as a perfect Pongal Treat for Families.
Overall:
Madha Gaja Raja is a full-on commercial entertainer, driven by Vishal's energetic performance and Santhanam's hilarious comedy. Santhanam's witty one-liners are a highlight, along with Anjali and Varu's glamour. It’s a perfect Pongal release that will appeal to a wide family audience and serves as a fitting tribute to legendary comedians like Manivannan, Manobala, and Chitti Babu.
