#Kottukaali Review
#Kottukaali - The Adamant Girl
2024-Tamil
Starring : Anna Ben , Soori
Directed By PS Vinoth Raj
Plot : A Girl from a family is considered possessed when she stops talking. Her family along with her relative who is touted as her suitor (decided by their family) embark on a journey. Is the girl really possessed? What is the reason behind it? What all are the revelations that the family faces from incidents forms the rest of the crux.
Anna Ben in the lead role as Meena excels. She completely justifies the title. She doesn't have dialogues but wonderfully emotes through her eyes and actions. Soori as Pandi , her suitor does a terrific job. Right from his damaged voice to his angry body language, Soori has just reinvented himself. This film will stand as a very important film in both Soori and Anna Ben's Filmography for a long time. The rest of the Cast names weren't mentioned on screen , so I cannot actually pinpoint them, but as a whole they did wonderfully. Out of this lot , the Kid and Two Guys who acted as Drunkard gets a lot of claps and appreciation.
Technically the film is Strong. Cinematography by B.Sakthivel is so beautiful and captures the essence of the village and the surroundings. Though the majority of shots are either static shots or long shots , everything compliments the journey. The Film has no Music or Background Score, the team has used Sync-Sound to capture the Background Audio and mixed it. This works so beautifully as makes the audience also travel along the family making this more than a movie , makes it an experience. Kudos to Ganesh Siva for a sharp cut of the film . With a Short runtime of 105 mins , the film runs without any deviations or unwanted scenes. Special mention to the Art Department also.
Talking about the film's Negatives , the Film takes an initial 15-17 mins for the audience to understand the conflict and get involved in the story . Also there are a lot of cuss & swear words involved which might make the family audience uncomfortable a bit . The film's pacing is also relatively slow (which is needed for such a film) might not be okay with everyone. There is no much explanation given to some events (left for own interpretation) which might make audience confused and disconnected a bit if they don't understand it properly.
Director P S Vinoth Raj has taken a very simple one line and has built a beautiful film revolving it. The film which talks about very important issues like Male Chauvinism and Regressive mindset in rural areas is handled brilliantly and delicately. The film's climax is something that Tamil Cinema has never witnessed before! The Climax will definitely have you talking more about it once you step out of the hall. More than film's ending, it acts a question asked to each and everyone of us. This will definitely leave a mark.
Overall: VinothRaj's Kottukaali is a wonderful piece of art that speaks about a very important and delicate issue and addresses it beautifully supported by career best performances of Anna Ben & Soori and lively perfomances of all the village people.
A Must Watch Film
Rating : 4.5-4.75/5
